US Consumer Price Index – July 2026

Report Date: Aug 12 2026

Inflation remained moderate in July, with the CPI rising 0.1% for the month and 3.4% year‑over‑year. Core CPI (excluding food and energy) increased 0.2%, reflecting steady underlying price pressures. Shelter costs rose 0.1% and accounted for about two‑thirds of the monthly increase, while energy prices fell 1.5%. Food prices also rose 0.1%, driven by higher restaurant costs.

For young investors, this report shows inflation is cooling but still above the Fed’s 2% Annual target inflation rate.
The inflation rate influences interest rates, borrowing costs, and market expectations. Persistent inflation above 2.0%-2.3% can hinder economic activity and expansion which could affect the number of jobs available for US workers. This snapshot reports inflation running at +3.4%, which is “too hot”. Economists are hoping for continued inflation cooling in the coming months.
Tracking CPI helps connect everyday prices to broader financial activity and forward planning.
The next BLS Consumer Price Index report will be released on Friday, Sept 11, 2026 8:30AM EST.
